About the Illustration

A jackal stands before a group of richly dressed women on the steps of a palace garden. Pink lotus flowers, irises and fruiting branches surround the pool, while domes and a long balustrade recede into the distance. The animated animal and elegant setting bring together the humour and decorative richness of Goble's fairy-tale art.
