About the Illustration
Three visitors approach a sweeping flight of palace steps, beyond which richly dressed figures wait among trees and flowers. The foreground terrace is furnished with a balustrade, a peacock and a shallow pool at the edge of the composition. Warm stone colours and carefully placed accents of red, blue and green give the scene a gentle harmony. The receding steps draw the eye towards the distant company and suggest the anticipation of a formal meeting.
About the Artist
Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books. His skill in watercolour and interest in Japanese and Indian art helped shape a distinctive style, combining delicate colour with flowing line and decorative detail. His imaginative treatment of figures, gardens and landscapes places his work within the Golden Age of British book illustration.
