About the Illustration
An elderly traveller stands on a cobbled street carrying a cockerel under one arm and leaning on a long staff. Women watch from the doorways behind him, their dark and brightly coloured garments set against weathered plaster and carved stone. A small tree climbs the wall between the entrances. The traveller's bent posture, patched clothing and lively companion give this scene a humorous character, supported by Goble's close attention to the textures of an old town.
About the Artist
Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books. His skill in watercolour and interest in Japanese and Indian art helped shape a distinctive style, combining delicate colour with flowing line and decorative detail. His imaginative treatment of figures, gardens and landscapes places his work within the Golden Age of British book illustration.
