About the Illustration
A young swineherd in worn clothing stands beside a dark pig foraging among stones and plants. Golden leaves hang above the pair, and the broad roots of a tree lead into a softly coloured woodland background. The boy's staff, torn garments and loose posture give the subject an informal, rustic character. Goble treats the modest scene with the same attention to line and colour that he brings to his more elaborate palace interiors and magical encounters.
About the Artist
Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books. His skill in watercolour and interest in Japanese and Indian art helped shape a distinctive style, combining delicate colour with flowing line and decorative detail. His imaginative treatment of figures, gardens and landscapes places his work within the Golden Age of British book illustration.
