About the Illustration
A woman in a long green gown stands before an assembled company beneath a canopy of trees. Seated listeners turn towards her from beside a covered table, while a peacock lowers its head near a rug in the foreground. The rich costumes and shaded garden give the gathering a courtly atmosphere. Goble arranges the figures as an attentive audience, making the woman's outstretched hand and the act of storytelling the centre of the composition.
