About the Illustration
A young man stands beneath a rocky arch, raising one hand towards a pale figure suspended above him. Long, translucent draperies flow from the apparition into the shadowed grotto, where curling plants and rock formations create an intricate foreground. Cool greens and blues dominate the composition, relieved by a softer light beyond the opening. Goble gives the encounter a hushed, otherworldly quality through the contrast between the solid rocks and the floating figure.
About the Artist
Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books. His skill in watercolour and interest in Japanese and Indian art helped shape a distinctive style, combining delicate colour with flowing line and decorative detail.
