About the Illustration
A young woman in a flowing crimson dress stands upon a great fish-like creature at the edge of a turbulent sea. Her pale veil curves high above her and leads the eye towards a distant rocky island crowned with towers. The creature's fins and open mouth fill the foreground, adding a dramatic contrast to the delicacy of the figure. Curling water, clouds and fabric make this one of the most animated compositions in the group.
About the Artist
Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books. His skill in watercolour and interest in Japanese and Indian art helped shape a distinctive style, combining delicate colour with flowing line and decorative detail. His imaginative treatment of figures, gardens and landscapes places his work within the Golden Age of British book illustration.
