About the Illustration

A barefoot young woman stands beside an oversized wicker basket, her loose hair falling across a patterned dress. A crowned man in a sweeping blue cloak approaches from the right, framed by a stone doorway. Pink flowers grow behind the basket and add colour to the otherwise spare setting. The scale of the basket and the contrast between the figures' clothing lend the scene its fairy-tale character, while the open foreground keeps attention on their encounter.

About the Artist

Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books. His skill in watercolour and interest in Japanese and Indian art helped shape a distinctive style, combining delicate colour with flowing line and decorative detail. His imaginative treatment of figures, gardens and landscapes places his work within the Golden Age of British book illustration.
