About the Illustration
A dark-haired woman stands in a long, richly patterned gown beneath a pale embroidered veil. Her green mantle extends across the foreground, its floral border carefully picked out against the softly tinted background. The restrained setting allows the costume, graceful pose and flowing folds to become the focus of the picture. This is one of the quieter compositions in the group, with a decorative appeal rooted in Goble's delicate colour and attention to fabric.
About the Artist
Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books. His skill in watercolour and interest in Japanese and Indian art helped shape a distinctive style, combining delicate colour with flowing line and decorative detail. His imaginative treatment of figures, gardens and landscapes places his work within the Golden Age of British book illustration.
