About the Illustration

A ragged figure bends beneath a large roll of patterned fabric outside a castle, with a green textile trailing along the rocky path. Tall flowers grow beside the steps, softening the heavy walls, towers and barred entrance. The contrast between the traveller's worn clothing and the richly decorated burden gives the scene an intriguing quality. Goble combines warm stone and cloud colours with bright touches of pink, blue and green throughout the foreground.

Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books.
