About the Illustration
A woman turns from a laid table to watch a group of birds sweeping through the air above her. The table is set with dishes, drinking vessels and fruit, while a large jug stands on the floor beside it. Goble places the domestic scene against a softly coloured, almost empty background, giving the birds unusual prominence. Their spread wings and crossing flight paths bring a lively sense of movement to the carefully arranged still life below.
About the Artist
Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books. His skill in watercolour and interest in Japanese and Indian art helped shape a distinctive style, combining delicate colour with flowing line and decorative detail. His imaginative treatment of figures, gardens and landscapes places his work within the Golden Age of British book illustration.
