About the Illustration

Three figures stand on a palm-lined shore beside a small boat with a red sail. The long green train of one woman's gown curves across the sandy bank, while the figure nearest the boat turns towards the water. A distant settlement lies low on the opposite shore. The bold sail and dark palm trunks give structure to a scene otherwise filled with soft light, lending the moment of departure both colour and a sense of distance.

About the Artist

Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books. His skill in watercolour and interest in Japanese and Indian art helped shape a distinctive style, combining delicate colour with flowing line and decorative detail. His imaginative treatment of figures, gardens and landscapes places his work within the Golden Age of British book illustration.
