About the Illustration
A richly dressed company assembles on a broad stone terrace, where a visitor stands below the steps before them. Tall cypresses, clipped garden planting and a classical column lend the setting a formal elegance. A peacock occupies the lower right of the picture, its long train balancing the line of figures above. Goble combines the ceremonial arrangement of a court scene with the colour and detail of an imagined palace garden.
About the Artist
Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books. His skill in watercolour and interest in Japanese and Indian art helped shape a distinctive style, combining delicate colour with flowing line and decorative detail. His imaginative treatment of figures, gardens and landscapes places his work within the Golden Age of British book illustration.
