About the Illustration
A young man in a green tunic pauses on a cobbled street, watched by a small crowd gathered beside the doorways. Baskets of fruit, a striped awning and a flowering window ledge give the setting the character of a busy old town. Goble brings the scene to life through the youth's surprised expression and the varied faces behind him. The close arrangement of figures and architecture makes this an engaging, richly detailed street scene.
