About the Illustration

An elegantly dressed couple stands at the centre of an ornate palace room, surrounded by attendants and onlookers. The woman's yellow train spreads across the pale floor, while a musician at the right adds to the sense of ceremony. Framed pictures, red columns and a deep doorway give the interior its richness. Goble uses the broad floor space to set off the colourful figures, making the exchange at the centre of the room the focus of the scene.

About the Artist

Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books. His skill in watercolour and interest in Japanese and Indian art helped shape a distinctive style, combining delicate colour with flowing line and decorative detail. His imaginative treatment of figures, gardens and landscapes places his work within the Golden Age of British book illustration.
