About the Illustration

A woman in a blue-green gown waits beside flowering rose bushes as a young man bows towards her. A spreading pine and a slender cypress rise behind the garden walls, with a distant landscape glimpsed between them. The space separating the figures gives their gestures particular emphasis. Subtle pinks, greens and stone colours make this a gentle garden scene, enlivened by the contrasting patterns and silhouettes of the two costumes.
