About the Illustration

A magnificently dressed elephant emerges from a shadowed forest beneath a small ceremonial parasol. Its pink and green trappings are picked out with elaborate ornament, contrasting with the simple dress of the surprised traveller in the foreground. An appealing animal subject with the rich colour and theatrical atmosphere of Goble's story illustrations.
