A superb signed portrait of Churchill from the personal collection of Marshal of the Royal Air Force Lord Portal of Hungerford, the air commander who served at Churchill’s side through the whole central drama of Britain’s war. The image itself was taken by Edward Steichen in New York in 1932, during Churchill’s so-called wilderness years, before his return to office, before the premiership, and before the national ordeal of 1940. Seen through the later Portal provenance, the portrait becomes especially compelling: the pre-war Churchill, already forceful and prophetic in appearance, preserved by one of the men who would help carry his wartime strategy into action.

Portal became Chief of the Air Staff in October 1940, at the height of Britain’s peril, and remained in that role throughout the war. Churchill later remembered him as “the accepted star of the Air Force”, adding that “Portal remained with me throughout the war.” The National Portrait Gallery similarly records that Portal won Churchill’s admiration for his skill in working with the other services and with his American colleagues.

Their relationship was forged in the machinery of high command: Chiefs of Staff meetings, bombing policy, Anglo-American strategy, and the great Allied conferences. Portal accompanied Churchill to the major wartime conferences, and at Casablanca in January 1943 the Combined Chiefs of Staff selected him to coordinate the British and American bomber forces in the combined offensive against Germany. A signed Churchill portrait from Portal’s collection therefore has a particular historical charge. It links the Prime Minister’s will, language and political command with the air chief who helped translate that will into Allied air power.

The photograph presents beautifully. The matt surface gives the image a soft, dignified presence; the board mount and original leather frame add period character and authority. Condition is very good, with Churchill’s signature clear and well placed. The frame shows only light rubbing, small corner wear and normal age, while the portrait itself remains strong and highly attractive. A distinguished Churchill signed photograph with exceptional wartime provenance. Size approx. 9inchs by 7inchs.
