First Edition, First Impression of Churchill's engaging account of his 1907 travels in British East Africa, where his "irrepressible interest in everything new" (Woods, p. 81) encompassed rhino hunts, the perils of sleeping sickness, and the pragmatic justice of District Officers.
Octavo. Bound in Fine red morocco with black onlay and gilt tooling. Features a fully gilt spine, hand-sewn silk headbands, "old Dutch" marbled endpapers, and a striking onlay of a Winston Churchill hunting scene on the front board. An excellent, finely bound copy. Sixty-one illustrations from photographs by the author and Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon Wilson, including three maps.
Churchill's 1905 appointment as Under-Secretary at the Colonial Office provided the backdrop for this East African expedition, which began privately but soon transformed into an insightful, semi-official examination of colonial affairs in Kenya and Uganda. Prior to its book publication, the work captivated readers as a serial in the Strand Magazine, a testament to Churchill's rising political prominence and the considerable value of his contributions.
