FRANKLYN, Julian. Shield and Crest: An Account of the Art and Science of Heraldry. London: MacGibbon & Kee, 1960.

First edition, first impression. Octavo. Original burgundy cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Colour frontispiece, colour plates and numerous illustrations in the text, with a foreword by A. C. T. White.

Churchill’s own copy, presented by the author and artist with an elaborately illuminated tribute celebrating “The voice and inspiration of the nation that saved the world.”

The front free endpaper is addressed to “Sir Winston Spencer Churchill K.G.” in blue and gold capitals, above flowing black calligraphy and interlaced decorative borders. The dedication offers “This token of our unshakable admiration and inalienable support.” Julian Franklyn has signed beneath in green ink, with the artist Norman Manwaring named below. The elaborate lettering gives the presentation the ceremonial character of the heraldry within.

On the facing pastedown are Randolph S. Churchill’s pictorial bookplate and the black “From the Library of Sir Winston Churchill” label. This posthumous provenance label, paired with Randolph’s bookplate, is characteristic of volumes inherited from his father’s library.

The gift prompted a warm acknowledgement from Churchill. Writing from 28 Hyde Park Gate on 9 November 1960, he thanked the senders for the “beautifully produced” book and “the words with which you have inscribed it”. His acknowledgement was subsequently offered by RR Auction. The letter is illustrated for historical reference only and is not included with the book.

Franklyn’s study explores the history, language and traditions of heraldry, illustrated with Manwaring’s colourful shields, crests, birds and beasts. Its printed dedication honours the Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal of England.

Illustrator: Norman Manwaring.
