First edition, first impression of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, one of the defining dystopian novels of the twentieth century.
Published in 1932, Huxley imagined a future society governed through genetic engineering, psychological conditioning, rigid social castes, consumerism and the pleasure-inducing drug soma. Its vision of a population controlled through comfort rather than overt oppression has given the novel an enduring place beside Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four as one of the great literary examinations of freedom, technology and social control.
This copy has been finely rebound in full navy morocco. The boards are framed with double gilt fillets and elaborate gilt corner ornaments. The spine is formed with five raised bands, the title and author lettered in gilt, with the remaining compartments richly decorated in intricate gilt tooling incorporating stylised floral motifs, stars and crescent moons. The date 1932 is tooled at the foot. Finished with finely marbled endpapers.
