First edition, first impression of A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh, published on 14 October 1926 and one of the defining books of twentieth-century children’s literature. It was the first prose collection devoted to Pooh and the world of the Hundred Acre Wood, bringing together Christopher Robin, Piglet, Eeyore, Rabbit, Owl, Kanga and Roo in the form in which they became internationally beloved.
Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard, whose drawings established the enduring visual identity of Milne’s characters. The celebrated “100 Aker Wood” map is retained, together with Shepard’s numerous line illustrations, now inseparable from the stories themselves.
Finely rebound in full dark green morocco, the boards framed with double gilt fillets and delicate gilt corner tools. The spine has five raised bands, gilt lettering and decorative compartments incorporating tree motifs, with 1926 tooled at the foot. Finished with richly patterned marbled endpapers.
