KIPLING, Rudyard. The Jungle Book.
London: Macmillan and Co., 1894. First edition, first impression.
Kipling’s landmark collection of stories set in India, introducing many of his most enduring characters, including Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera, Shere Khan and Kaa.
The volume contains seven stories, among them the three principal Mowgli tales, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, Toomai of the Elephants and The White Seal. Drawing on Kipling’s experiences of India, the book combines folklore, animal fable and adventure, and became one of the defining works of late Victorian literature.
Illustrated throughout by John Lockwood Kipling, W. H. Drake and Paul Frenzeny, with numerous black-and-white illustrations and decorative headings.
Finely bound in full navy-blue morocco, the upper board centred with a large gilt vignette of elephants and mahouts, within double gilt rules and corner ornaments. The spine has raised bands, gilt lettering and richly decorated compartments, with the date 1894 at the foot. Marbled endpapers complete the binding.
