London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1928. First Edition, First Impression.
Octavo. A finely bound example of the first edition, first impression of The House at Pooh Corner, the fourth and final volume in A.A. Milne’s immortal Winnie-the-Pooh series. Bound in sumptuous full red morocco, with a gilt onlay to the upper cover depicting Christopher Robin and Pooh, gilt cornerpieces, and double fillet borders. The spine is richly gilt in compartments with floral motifs, ruled bands, and gilt lettering. The date is stamped at the foot. Hand-sewn silk headbands, marbled endpapers of striking hues, and all edges gilt complete this masterful presentation.
The volume introduces one of the most beloved characters in children’s literature, Tigger, and concludes with Christopher Robin’s poignant farewell—cementing its place as a work of profound resonance not only for children but also for adults reflecting on the passage from innocence to experience.
The first edition was published in October 1928 in a print run of only 75,000 copies - considerably fewer than the cumulative demand over the following decades. Fine copies in luxury bindings remain especially scarce, and this example combines both literary significance and exquisite craftsmanship.
The Pooh books, illustrated throughout with Ernest Shepard’s delicate line drawings, represent one of the high points of twentieth-century children’s literature. Together with When We Were Very Young (1924), Winnie-the-Pooh (1926), and Now We Are Six (1927), Milne created a mythos that continues to enchant across generations, its impact extending beyond literature into theatre, film, and cultural imagination worldwide.
