KIPLING, Rudyard. Rewards and Fairies.
London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1910. First edition, first impression.
Kipling’s celebrated sequel to Puck of Pook’s Hill, and the book in which “If—” first appeared in print. Now one of the best-known poems in the English language, “If—” closes the volume and has become inseparable from Kipling’s reputation.
The collection returns to Dan and Una, whose encounters with Puck draw figures and episodes from across English history into a sequence of stories and poems. Among them are Cold Iron, The Wrong Thing, The Knife and the Naked Chalk and The Tree of Justice. Kipling’s blend of folklore, history and moral instruction makes the book one of the defining works of his later period.
Illustrated by Frank Craig, with the original title page printed in red and black and Kipling’s device to the verso of the half-title.
Finely bound in full red morocco, the boards framed with gilt rules and small corner tools. Spine with raised bands, richly gilt compartments, gilt lettering and the date 1910 at foot; marbled endpapers and gilt edges.
