A courtly company follows behind him, framed by a tall cypress and distant mountains. Flowering branches rise across the foreground, while the balustrade curves towards an arched bridge below. The strong diagonal of the steps gives the composition a sense of movement, balanced by the careful detail of the costumes, stonework and garden planting.

About the Artist

Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books. His skill in watercolour and interest in Japanese and Indian art helped shape a distinctive style, combining delicate colour with flowing line and decorative detail. His imaginative treatment of figures, gardens and landscapes places his work within the Golden Age of British book illustration.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0794/7848/9355/files/18-warwick-goble-fabled-realms-the-herald-on-the-palace-steps.jpg?v=1793699246
