Her floral skirt spreads beside a tray, a bowl, a bottle and a coil of thread on the ground. The almost empty background gives the scene the intimacy of a small workshop or private room. Goble draws attention to the contrast between the upright, motionless figure and the woman's careful gesture, suggesting an unusual act of making or transformation.

About the Artist

Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books. His skill in watercolour and interest in Japanese and Indian art helped shape a distinctive style, combining delicate colour with flowing line and decorative detail. His imaginative treatment of figures, gardens and landscapes places his work within the Golden Age of British book illustration.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0794/7848/9355/files/25-warwick-goble-fabled-realms-the-figure-on-the-pedestal.jpg?v=1793699244
