A palace occupies the rocky height ahead, framed by slender trees and distant mountains. The vertical composition draws the eye from the small figures and foreground flowers towards the bird and the elevated building. Goble's gentle colours give the scene a sense of adventure without disturbing the tranquillity of the landscape.

About the Artist

Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books. His skill in watercolour and interest in Japanese and Indian art helped shape a distinctive style, combining delicate colour with flowing line and decorative detail. His imaginative treatment of figures, gardens and landscapes places his work within the Golden Age of British book illustration.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0794/7848/9355/files/29-warwick-goble-fabled-realms-the-bird-above-the-hilltop-palace.jpg?v=1793699246
