The standing woman's patterned red dress and floating veil contrast with the darker clothing of her companion. Fine rigging, an ornate stern and a softly coloured sky give the distant vessel an almost dreamlike presence. The composition combines the movement of the sea with Goble's characteristic interest in decorative costume and unusual encounters.

About the Artist

Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was a British illustrator whose work ranged from illustrated magazines to richly illustrated books. His skill in watercolour and interest in Japanese and Indian art helped shape a distinctive style, combining delicate colour with flowing line and decorative detail. His imaginative treatment of figures, gardens and landscapes places his work within the Golden Age of British book illustration.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0794/7848/9355/files/02-warwick-goble-fabled-realms-adrift-before-the-golden-ship.jpg?v=1793699246
